LESSONS You will quickly find that equestrian sports are unlike any other sport in play, team or individual. With written history that dates back to the time of the ancient Greeks, our sport combines athletics and animal science. In addition to learning proper posture and technique, the student must learn the daily routines involved in caring for livestock, as well as the physiology and behavior or man's most versatile domestic animal.
Here at Beaver Dam, we strive to teach the student not only basic riding skills, and proper horse handling, but also how to appreciate and respect these noble animals.
Please keep in mind, horseback riding, though it looks easy, is an extremely difficult and technical sport. Students progress on an outcome basis: they only move on to more challenging skills when they have properly mastered easier ones. A competent rider should be able to:
1. Catch, halter, and bring in their assigned horse. 2. Groom and tack up unassisted. 3. Mount unassisted from the ground and from a mounting block. 4. Effectively steer and motivate the horse. 5. Ride at the walk and trot, then eventually the canter, displaying comfort and proper technique, alone and in a group. 6. Navigate various obstacles such as cones and ground poles. 7. Exhibit basic knowledge of the colors, types, and parts of the horse, what they eat, and how to take care of their stalls and environment.
Lessons are taught per appointment only, and a limited number of spots are available. Since the focus of our barn is showing, all riders will be taught with the idea in mind of eventually showing and presenting a horse for judging.
